US college credits

Dante Alighieri Siena is pleased to offer the option of earning recognized US college credits for Italian language courses. Students enrolled in accredited US universities, colleges or high schools have the following options for transferring Italian language credits:
A. Dante Alighieri Siena or the student submits the necessary documentation directly to the Language Department or Study Abroad Advisor for credit approval in his/her university/college/high school. We recommend following these simple steps in order to assure obtaining academic credit:

1. Requirements may vary in different institutions so contact your Study Abroad Advisor or the Italian Language Department and find out about requirements regarding academic credit for Italian immersion programs abroad.

2. Inform us which documents are required, i.e. program syllabus, teaching method etc and we will forward this information either to you or directly to the Study Abroad Advisor.

3. Make sure that all registration paper work required by your college is completed once you have the approval of your Study Abroad Advisor and before signing up for your Italian language course. Bring any forms which your Study Abroad program requires with you and have them filled out by one of our instructors before returning to the United States.

4. Throughout your Italian language study you will be assessed by your instructors. In order to obtain Academic credit you must complete your course work, attend classes and attain the expected grade level for your course.

5. When you have completed your study abroad program your academic transcript will be sent to your college for the transfer of academic credit.

6. Fees for the transfer of academic credits will be charged directly by your institution. The cost of the academic credit varies depending on your institution and of the number of credits. These fees are separate to and in addition to the cost of your program with Dante Alighieri - Siena.

7. Please start the application process if possible 12 weeks in advance in order to allow sufficient time for the program to be approved by your college.

B. Students may earn academic credit through Brookhaven College a comprehensive American community college fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (www.sacscoc.org). Brookhaven College is our "school of records" for Italian language courses and students may earn credits through their Multinational Academic Program (MAP). Students currently attending high school who will be at least 16 years old the first day of the program may also be able to register for and obtain college credits through the Brookhaven College MAP program as a High School Concurrent Student. Please speak with your own high school and/or district before registering with Brookhaven College. Credits will be issued for transfer directly by Brookhaven College. Students must register for the credit program with Brookhaven, and an additional fee will be required. Students may earn credits in up to four semesters (two years) of Italian language (beginner and intermediate level) programs of 20 weekly hours or more. Brookhaven College will assist you with the credit application process providing you with detailed credit application instructions and additional support documents that are required to apply for credit.
