Code DESCRIPTION AND EXPECTED COURSE OUTCOMES/GOALS
Italiano A1 This course is an introduction to the study of Italian for those who have had no previous contact with the language. The course covers the basic points of Italian grammar. The students will concentrate on four aspects of communication; oral expression (speaking), writing, oral comprehension (listening), and reading on a basic level. They will acquire basic knowledge of Italian culture. Attention is given to correct pronunciation of Italian, with special emphasis on sounds that may be difficult for native speakers of English. The objective of this course is to introduce the student to the study of Italian language and culture. Students will learn to communicate in Italian using short conversations on topics concerning every day situations of life (family, friends, restaurants). They will learn to express themselves using verbs in present and past tense, and will increase their comprehension of written and “heard” Italian language, by participating in class dialogues. The students’ ability to write in Italian will improve, through the practice of writing short essays in class and they will increase the ability to converse in Italian assuring the quality of their vocabulary improves.

Italiano A2 Following Italian A1, this course offers a logical continuation of the study of Italian grammar after the first semester. The student will learn more advanced grammar concepts, especially with attention to the past tenses. At the same time, during the lessons, greater emphasis is placed on both written and oral (spoken and hearing comprehension) expressions. During class lectures, the student will understand written texts having to do with Italian life and culture and will increase the vocabulary needed for every day life in Italy. Increasing his oral understanding (hearing), the student will be able to understand brief notices on radio and television broadcasts. By the end he will be able to communicate on an intermediate level, and will be able to correct himself if he makes errors in vocabulary and grammar.

Italiano B1 Following Italiano A2, this course aims to increase the students’ knowledge of Italian Grammar and Culture. The student will learn more advanced grammar concepts, especially with attention to the subjunctive to express opinions, wishes, moods and possibilities. At the same time the student will improve his written and oral comprehension and production. He will increase his vocabulary and improve his mode of expression in Italian language.

Italiano B2 This course aims to increase the students’ knowledge of Italy’s language and to deepen his understanding of its culture. Much of this course will center on the study of different aspects of Italian culture. The class will always emphasize oral and written skills, and oral (hearing) and written (reading) comprehension. The class will review the basic elements of Italian grammar, centering on the agreement with verb tenses and the use of the indicative and subjunctive. The student should become able to apply his knowledge of Italian grammar to his oral and written expression. He should be able to use verb forms in the indicative and subjunctive forms, and should be able to express his opinions both orally and in writing. The student will read written texts about life in Italy. He will increase his vocabulary and improve his mode of expression in Italian language. This course will prepare the student for a higher level of conversation, grammar, written composition and literature.

Italiano C1 This course in Italian language carries the student to a higher advanced level. Linguistic work is continued and combined with additional information concerning modern Italian culture and Italy’s role in the world. Speaking and writing skills will be of utmost importance. The student will have the opportunity to use appropriate vocabulary in diverse situations, with special attention to slang and modern idiomatic expression. The objective of this course is to assist the student in arriving at a higher, more thorough understanding of Italian language and culture. The students’ ability to communicate in Italian language should be highly competent.
